How to choose a red dot

Dot size first. A 2–3 MOA dot covers less of the target and rewards careful aiming at distance; a 5–6 MOA dot is faster to pick up for close, quick work. If you plan to add a magnifier later, stay small — a magnified 6 MOA dot gets blobby.

Then pick the body style. Tube sights enclose the emitter, shrug off rain and dust, and usually carry bigger batteries. Open reflex sights give you a wider window and lower weight, at some cost in weather resistance. Check the mount height too: absolute co-witness sits your dot in line with iron sights, lower 1/3 keeps the window clear above them.

Finally, look at battery logistics — side-loading trays let you swap without re-zeroing, and shake-awake circuits mean you can leave it on the shelf ready.
