Footprint first. Your slide cut (or adapter plate) decides what fits — check whether your slide is milled for an RMR, RMSc or other pattern before comparing anything else. A sight that needs a new plate can cost you height and screws.
Then think window and dot. A wider window is more forgiving of imperfect presentation — worth having on a carry or duty gun. A 3 MOA dot suits most pistol distances; bigger dots are faster but coarser. Auto-brightness is convenient day to day, but make sure there is a manual override for odd lighting.
Last, battery access: top- or side-loading designs let you change the cell without removing the optic, which means your zero survives the swap.
